James lectures on the art market at universities, business schools, art institutions, and private functions across Europe and Asia.

He also advises art collectors on buying, selling, and managing their collections.

He considers himself fortunate to have been raised in a world of international art, design, and architecture, thanks to his family's luxury furniture-making business, Titchmarsh & Goodwin, founded by his grandfather in 1920.

Since 2006, James has pioneered art market courses at Christie's Education in London and Hong Kong; Maastricht University in the Netherlands; Ca’ Foscari University in Italy; HEC Paris and KEDGE Business School in France. He has also been a visiting lecturer at the London School of Economics, Kingston University, University of the Arts London (Wimbledon), and City University in the UK; Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands; and Peking University in China.

He has been a guest speaker at Transparency International, Art Taipei, Art Beijing, the Courtauld Institute of Art, the Association of Fine Art Dealers in the Netherlands, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

James’s research and writing have appeared in The Economist, Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Art Newspaper. His commentary has also been featured on BBC TV and Radio and CNN.

His book, The International Art Markets: The Essential Guide for Collectors and Investors, covering 42 national art markets, was published in English in July 2008 and in Chinese in June 2010.

In 2025, James completed a PhD at Durham University's History department, on “The Role of Artists in the Late 18th-Century British Art Market: The Case of Johan Zoffany.”

With a lifelong background in the arts and over twenty years of dedicated research, James offers a uniquely rounded perspective on the international art market, encompassing its history, dynamics, and future.

His expertise is reflected in a series of eleven lectures, covering the following topics:

  • The history of the art market from antiquity to the present
  • Art’s value from the perspectives of economics, aesthetics, art history, and sociology
  • The roles of artists, patrons, collectors, dealers, auction houses, and museums
  • Art taxation
  • Art law
  • Technology’s impact on the art market
  • The future of the art market
